Business people know the importance of a prenuptial agreement

When most Colorado residents hear someone is getting a prenuptial agreement, it can come with the stigma that someone is planning a way out of their marriage. For business professionals, thinking ahead is a way of life to ensure that their successful ventures continue to thrive no matter what happens to them personally. It is not necessarily a bad thing to prepare for the worst-case scenario and hope for the best outcome, which is where a prenuptial agreement can help.

For example, if a couple that is comprised of two successful, business-minded people who each have their own multi-million dollar ventures decided to get married, they would want to keep their businesses out of the relationship. The reason for this is in the off-chance that the marriage failed, their businesses would not be affected by the divorce. A prenuptial agreement could ensure that nothing would be changed as a result of the divorce such as change of management or controlling interest in the company.

This may not sound like a romantic notion, but in the example of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's marriage, they have opted to get a prenuptial agreement for just that reason. Both have their own money from television shows and recording labels to clothing and tennis shoes lines. Yet, they have agreed to keep their money separate by signing a prenuptial agreement.

The main purpose of a prenuptial agreement is to set up guidelines for how financial assets, such as property or business interests, are divided in case a couple gets divorced. Under Colorado law, if a prenuptial agreement is not in place, the state decides how the assets will be split up. It should be noted that these agreements may also include other provisions such as allowances for alimony and child custody should the couple have children.
