Charlie Sheen supports unusual child custody matter

It is not often that Colorado readers would turn to actor Charlie Sheen for an example of sound judgment and parenting wisdom, but that may be the case in recent days. The actor, who has struggled with longstanding substance abuse issues, is making headlines across the nation. This time, the spotlight is aimed at a recent child custody decision involving the actor and two of his former wives.

Sheen was once married to actress Denise Richards; the couple had two daughters together. In later years, Sheen married Brooke Mueller and fathered twin boys. That marriage also ended in divorce. Mueller has also struggled with addiction, and has reportedly sought rehab assistance nearly 20 times over the years.

Recently, social workers removed the now 4-year-old twins from Mueller's home. They say that Mueller was again abusing drugs and that her home was not a safe environment for the boys. The children were placed in the care of Richards, a decision that Sheen has publicly expressed support for. Richards has cared for the boys in the past, and seems willing to provide for their needs while the courts determine whether Mueller will be able to regain custody of the twins.

This case demonstrates the wide variety of child custody arrangements available to families. The best interests of the child or children involved should always be central to any custody determination, and in this case that seems to be the approach taken. For families in Colorado facing similar custody battles, it is important to realize that family courts will consider virtually any arrangement that provides for the safety and well-being of the child, even if that means placing children in the care of a former spouse of one of the biological parents.
