Is technology aimed at simplifying divorce a good thing?

Technology has vastly changed the lives of most Colorado residents, and the bulk of that change has been for the better. Now, several companies have created online tools aimed at simplifying the divorce process. While a faster and cheaper divorce may sound like a good option to many people, the reality is that very few couples can benefit from a Do-it-Yourself approach to the legal complexities involved in ending a marriage.

One company has created software that allows spouses to complete their divorce paperwork online. They can even serve and file their divorce online, all for a cost ranging between $1,000 and $3,000. Another company sells divorce mediation services via teleconferencing. That service starts at less than $800, and the price increases if additional assistance is required. Yet another company offers a 30-minute phone call with an attorney as part of an uncontested divorce package, with additional time available as needed, for a charge.

The only cases in which a DIY divorce could be beneficial to both spouses is when a couple has absolutely no assets, does not share children and in which both parties agree on every issue at hand. Anything more complicated than that will usually require a more traditional divorce approach. Addressing matters such as the division of marital wealth, child custody and other areas of contention will need a more personalized approach than online services can offer.

Spouses who are considering a DIY divorce package usually want to save money. It should be noted that there are a number of things that spouses can do to control the cost of their divorce, while still retaining the services of a divorce attorney to look after their interests. There are options for Colorado spouses that fall along the spectrum between financially devastating legal bills and an impersonal, one-size-fits-all online divorce kit.
