Options for doctors who are considering divorce

Recent research suggests that among health care professionals, doctors have some of the lowest rates of divorce. Even so, the demands of a career in medicine can place a toll on a marriage, and some Colorado physicians will end up contemplating divorce. If and when that happens, it is imperative to understand the options available and to know that not every divorce follows the same predictable path.

While a litigated divorce was once the norm, there are now a number of other approaches that can help a couple transition from married to single. One of the most effective is mediation. During mediation, both spouses have access to their own legal counsel. The difference lies in the approach; mediation requires that both spouses agree to make every effort to resolve their divorce issues outside of court.

By working through their differences in a collaborative manner, spouses can reach a settlement that can help to serve their individual interests. Less money is spent on legal fees, leaving more to be divided between the parties. In addition, mediation is usually far less contentious and adversarial than litigation. This is a huge benefit for those who will have to work together as co-parents in the years to come.

Colorado doctors who are heading toward divorce should take the time to research the available options. Mediation is not a good fit for every divorcing couple, but it can work for many. Couples who are able to take a collaborative approach can reap a number of benefits, making it well worth the time and effort to look into mediation as a method of moving beyond a broken marriage.
