Plastic surgeon tries to hide millions from ex-wife in divorce?

It can be difficult to survive a divorce with any assets intact. Most people in Colorado who are divorced know that it can be financially draining. One man allegedly attempted to hide millions from his soon-to-be ex-wife in their divorce. The husband, a 64-year-old plastic surgeon, has been accused of going to great lengths to set aside money by creating phony companies outside of the United States.

The U.S. Attorney's office has indicted the man on multiple counts of wire fraud. According to authorities, the husband drove from his home in the United States to another country to hide money. Fraudulent loans, accounts and companies were supposedly created by the husband in multiple locations, including Colorado. The government has seized $4.6 million from a bank on the west coast that it alleges was part of the man's scheme to hide the money.

After being married for some 28 years, the ex-wife went to authorities claiming that her husband was attempting to defraud not only her but the courts as well. She has claimed to be destitute and unable to pay her attorney's fees. A federal grand jury is seeking forfeiture of all monies that were seized in California, as well as some $3 million that was deposited in two banks in Panama. It will be up to the courts to determine the validity of his ex-wife's and the government's claims.

It is difficult to end a marriage under the best of circumstances, but when one spouse appears to be cheating the other, things can get contentious. Colorado divorce courts frown on spouses who try to hide assets in order to avoid dividing them with the other party. In fact, in some circumstances, courts have even awarded the slighted spouse 100 percent of the asset that was hidden. Anyone who suspects that their spouse is hiding assets has the right to ask the court to order the other spouse to disclose all assets and possibly even submit to a financial audit.
