How the family pediatrician can assist during a divorce

When a Colorado family is moving through the end of a marriage, many parents want to do everything in their power to make things easier on their shared children. That can mean different things to different people; some children have a unique set of needs when it comes to their parent's divorce. However, there is someone who can assist, one whom many families overlook when moving through a challenging time: the family pediatrician.

In many cases, the family pediatrician will have developed a good relationship with a child over the years. Even better, he or she will have a lengthy medical file that contains all of a child's health information. That data can come in handy if a child begins to have trouble adjusting to the change in family structure.

Tapping into this resource begins by contacting the pediatrician and letting him or her know that a divorce is underway. Parents should schedule an appointment to bring the child in and have a wellness check-up and ask the pediatrician to assess the child for both mental and emotional well-being. That gives the doctor the chance to ask the child how he or she is handling the divorce and any changes in living arrangements.

Many times, children will put on a good front for their parents. This is especially true for older children, who will be aware that Mom and Dad are going through a hard time and will want to avoid causing more turmoil within the family. They may assure both parents that everything is fine, even though they may be struggling to come to terms with the divorce. By having the family pediatrician broach the subject, Colorado parents can help determine if their child is truly adjusting and seek out additional services if needed.
