How to handle the holidays and child custody

When a Colorado family is going through divorce, parents can easily become distracted by the stress and turmoil of the process. That can make it easy to overlook the best interests of the children, even for the best of parents. Handling visitation during the holiday season can be a challenge for parents who are in the middle of child custody negotiations. However, facilitating these visits is essential to providing a positive holiday experience for everyone involved.

Parents should always avoid speaking ill of each other in the presence of a shared child. That is especially true during the holidays, when children should be focused on celebrating the season and embracing family traditions. Parents must remember that children form their self-esteem based on their connection with both parents. When one parent presents a negative portrait of the other, kids can suffer.

It is also important to take a collaborative approach to scheduling during this busy time of year. At times, that may mean allowing a child to visit the other parent and his or her extended family outside of the established visitation times. Being flexible is important, and gives children an excellent example of positive problem solving skills.

The holidays can be a challenging time for any Colorado family, especially those who are going through divorce and child custody negotiations. However, maintaining a positive attitude and facilitating visits is an invaluable gift that parents can give their children during the holiday season. It is also an excellent way to initiate the co-parenting relationship, which will continue for many years to come.
