Palin child custody case will begin with a paternity test

The Palin family is back in the news as Bristol Palin, daughter of former vice presidential candidate and Alaska governor Sarah Palin, prepares to fight another custody battle. Bristol recently gave birth to her second child, a girl. Palin is unwed, and she recently broke off an engagement with a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He is now opening a child custody case in the matter, and readers in Colorado and across the nation will likely learn a great deal more about the Palins as the case moves through the legal process.

Palin's former fiancé believes he is the father of her newborn child. If he has not been named as such on the infant's birth certificate, the first step in the newly filed custody case will be paternity testing. Once paternity has been established, he will be able to move forward in seeking a role in the life of his daughter.

Palin has another child born out of wedlock, and that relationship eventually led to a custody battle. Palin has primary custody of her older child, a boy. She was once engaged to the child's father, but the wedding never occurred.

Media reports in Colorado and elsewhere on the matter are rife with speculation, including rumors that the Marine Corps veteran is asking for child support from Palin. As the case moves ahead, details can be confirmed through the paperwork that is filed from the case, as well as reports from the courtroom. Until that time, it is important that people avoid speculating on the matter. High-profile child custody cases are often dragged through the court of public opinion, which is of little help to any of the parties directly affected by the cases.
