The role that insurance plays during a Colorado divorce

Many Colorado spouses spend a great deal of time negotiating the details of child support and alimony payments. Few, however, take the time to consider what would happen if the spouse tasked with making those payments passed away before the payments were scheduled to come to an end. For many families who have gone through a divorce, that outcome would lead to financial devastation. A measure of protection is called for, and can be found in the form of life insurance.

Man refused the right to divorce his wife

An unusual case has highlighted a number of important issues related to both family law and mental health, for readers in Colorado and across the rest of the nation. A man who filed for divorce from his wife was recently told by a court of law that he will be unable to pursue the end of his marriage. That leaves him with little option but to remain married, apparently against his will. Viewed from a different perspective, his wife will remain responsible for her husband's welfare, despite what has to be a challenging set of circumstances.

Avoid racking up excessive legal costs during divorce

Ending a marriage comes at a cost, but there are steps that Colorado spouses can take to keep those costs under control. One of the most impactful involves making every effort to avoid unnecessary legal fees. That means avoiding fighting over small things during the property division portion of a divorce.

More millennials choosing prenuptial agreement

Recent research suggests that young couples are more interested in protecting their assets prior to marriage than their parents or grandparents were. In a survey conducted by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, respondents reported a noticeable increase in the number of  millennials who are drafting a prenuptial agreement prior to tying the knot. For Colorado residents who are considering marriage, it may be worthwhile to think about including a prenup in the wedding preparation process.

How to handle the holidays and child custody

When a Colorado family is going through divorce, parents can easily become distracted by the stress and turmoil of the process. That can make it easy to overlook the best interests of the children, even for the best of parents. Handling visitation during the holiday season can be a challenge for parents who are in the middle of child custody negotiations. However, facilitating these visits is essential to providing a positive holiday experience for everyone involved.
