Actor Ben Vereen did not properly divorce first wife

Many Colorado readers are familiar with the career of Ben Vereen, an entertainer who has had a long and successful career. Vereen has been making recent headlines not for a new entertainment role, but due to the fact that he is being accused of being married to two women at once. The case involves a long span of time and a divorce that may not have been properly handled many years ago.

Vereen married his first wife when he was just 19 years old in 1965. At the time, his bride was only 14 and pregnant with Vereen's child. The couple went their separate ways and filed for divorce in the 1970s. In 1976, Vereen married his second wife. When that couple divorced in 2012, they discovered that their marriage was not valid due to the fact that Vereen's first divorce was never finalized.

For her part, Vereen's first wife was also unaware that the divorce had never been made final. She found out when she applied for Social Security. Now, she is asking that Vereen follow through with the divorce and pay for all the costs associated with the process. According to a statement made by her attorney, she may also be seeking some form of financial settlement.

As this case illustrates, divorce is not always as cut-and-dried as it appears. Unless all of the legalities have been properly handled, the process may not go through as planned. This is true in Colorado and across the nation. In this case, it remains to be seen whether Ben Vereen's first wife will be able to obtain a portion of the entertainer's earnings from the years since their separation.
