Child custody and a brand-new school year

With the last days of summer right around the corner, many Colorado parents are preparing for the kids heading back to school. For those who have gone through a recent divorce and/or child custody case, this year's back-to-school list may include a few new checkpoints. The following information is provided in the hopes of helping parents create the best possible school environment for kids who are coming to terms with an altered child custody arrangement.

One of the most impactful things that parents can do to ease this time of transition for their kids is to bring teachers and administrators into the loop. Schedule a conference to discuss the changes in the family structure and to give teachers an outline of how those changes might affect the school year. If a child will be coming to school from different homes, that is important information to include.

For families who have had a contentious child custody outcome, it is also important to ensure that the school's administrative staff has the appropriate paperwork on file. Be sure to fill out the proper paperwork to outline who is authorized to pick up a child from school. Also include a copy of the custody agreement in each child's records, if necessary.

Parents might also want to consider making use of any available resources that the school or school district offers to children of divorce. Guidance counselors are always available to talk with kids who are having a difficult time adjusting. In some cases, schools even provide support groups for kids who are going through divorce and child custody changes, which can be very helpful for children who feel that they are alone in experiencing this type of family transition. With the right motivation and effort, Colorado parents can make going back to school an exciting experience for their child.
