Manuel Mehos awarded child custody of his two children

Many Colorado families might have heard or read about the recent verdict in the child custody case of Green Bank's chairman, Manuel Mehos, regarding his two children. Like many other parents who are trying to do what is best for their children, Mehos was not about to give up without a fight. Unfortunately, his efforts in the child custody case have made national headlines.

The couple was divorced in 2011, but that did not stop them from loving their children, now ages 4 and 6. The trouble began when Mehos became worried about the care that was being provided by his ex-wife. He heard stories of strange men going in-and-out of the home where his children live, and her behavior began to raise some flags as to whether Mrs. Mehos was fit to have custody of the two children.

However, according to a New York judge, the mother's personal life and choices were not an issue in the case. The real trouble came when the mother attempted to hide an alleged, long-time addiction to prescription drugs from the judge. Mrs. Mehos medical records showed that she had been taking a variety of prescription medication since the couple was married in 2006 and that she had been "doctor shopping" and saw as many as 28 doctors since 2008. Further, she had multiple prescriptions for antidepressants like Valium, Xanax and Klonopin, just to name a few.

Earlier this month, Mr. Mehos was granted the option of moving the children back to Houston and terminating his $5,000 a month child support obligation. The father agreed to provide the mother free travel for visitation purposes. Child custody disputes do not mean that the children in question automatically go to the mother. In cases like this, sometimes the father may be the best choice for the welfare of the children. Any Colorado father who believes that the health, safety or welfare of his children is at risk may request the court consider a modification of child custody.
